Sunday 9th May - walk ***** - The Grove woods circuit – sunny periods and
milder.
A frustrating start to the day but it turned out well in the end, with a
good foiling breeze forecast and after missing out on yesterday’s wind I
was keen to get out on the water. The direction was SSW possibly not the
best direction for Levington but there was a good high water just before
midday so I hoped to go to Levington to practice my gybes, there is a limit
to how many times you can watch the Sam Ross gybing video! Rob was also
keen to try Levington after he went out yesterday and was far from
impressed with The Dip, being gusty and lumpy, so perhaps I did not miss
much there but when checking Landguard weather station the wind was very
light:( We decided to look any way so I headed over to the marina arriving
at 8.45 and the wind was very light, struggling to get over 8 knots! Still,
I had fun with my camera watching a good fleet of squibs set up for a race
as well as a few yachts both starting their races right in front of us:)
Rob and I had a good catch up and finally gave up on the wind leaving then
marina just before midday with the wind still very light. The odd thing was
I had friends go to the River Stour and Alton Water both having OK foiling
sessions in much more wind than here at Levington ??? Still never mind
tomorrow is looking promising for a sail, who knows might even get out on
the fin and foil with any luck!
The good thing was I got home early to see Mag busy pottering in her garden
while the kittens caused mayhem, flying catching and doing their best to
flatten Mags newly planted plants! Then a sandwich for dinner and still no
sign of wind here in Felixstowe I gave up on windsurfing so we decided to
go for a walk. Mag had collected her usual plastic tube of slugs and snails
which had been munching on her seedlings to be released to the wild! We
decided to avoid the prom as it would be busy heading inland to the lovely
Grove Woods. There are a few bluebells and the wild garlic is starting to
bloom and soon spotted our first squirrel sitting in the middle od the path
as Mag released the slugs! Then we spotted the highlight of the afternoon,
a tiny baby squirrel was also in the path posing for me with my camera!
There were few people about, just lovely with chiff chaffs singing, I even
manged to snap one. Then another highlight as we walked out the bottom of
the wood, Mag saw a Jay which usually fly off but this one just sat in a
nearby tree and then landed on the grass in front of us, again I got some
nice pics. Back in the woods yet more squirrels including one big fella
resting on the branch in the sun while a couple of others ran about high
above us. There were three foils in the horse fields including one feeding
and another skipping about, just wonderful:) Then home for a cuppa and cake
while watching a good programme about hits from 1981!
